Winter and Your Hardwood Flooring

Winter is just beginning to show itself. We are a Palatine Hardwood Flooring company that is very used to the rough Chicago winters. How do you protect your hardwood flooring from the cold? Here are a few tips on protecting your hardwood flooring from the cold winter months:

1- Keep rags, mops or towels handy at all doorways: Snow and even salt tracked in from your shoes can greatly damage your hardwood flooring. Snow tracked in from shoes provides damaging moisture whereas salt tracked in can scratch your hardwood flooring. If you’re here in the Chicagoland area or any other area that receives snow during the winter months, then make sure you always have rags, mops or towels readily available at all doorways. If possible take your shoes off outside or in your garage area as to avoid stepping on hardwood flooring.

2- Watch the humidity level in the house: With the bitter cold comes dry air in your home. Dry air can be damaging to hardwood flooring, so make sure you watch the humidity level in your home.

3- Utilize hardwood-safe rugs: While some rugs can damage hardwood flooring with unsafe backing, utilize hardwood-safe rugs as much as you can during the winter months. Throwing down rugs will help keep that moisture from shoes off your hardwood floors.

4- Installing can still be done in the winter months: Hardwood flooring installation can most certainly still be done in the winter, so no worries if you decide you want to have your hardwood flooring installed in the winter. When working with a hardwood flooring company they will let you know what needs to be done in order to have a flawless installation done in the winter.

5- Acclimate: If you are considering hardwood flooring installation in the winter months, make sure the hardwood flooring has been acclimated to your home. Hardwood flooring companies are good about telling homeowners about this before hardwood flooring installation begins.
